An experimental procedure for converting ortho-nitrotoluene to ortho-toluidine via tin/HCl reduction under reflux, followed by alkaline workup, extraction with organic solvents, drying, and distillation to obtain toluidine free base. The process yields about 68% from nitro-toluene and can yield purer toluidine by a second distillation. Toluidines are described as versatile building blocks for dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other compounds.
