Plan A: Reduce copper sulfate with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in a basic solution to copper oxide, but results are a fine, air-oxidizing precipitate that turns black; yield and handling issues prompt an alternative method.
Plan B: A faster method using copper sulfate, sodium bisulfite, sodium chloride, and sodium hydroxide in hot water yields a stable orange copper oxide with better yield (~67%), obtained as a dry orange powder after filtration and ethanol washing.
Additional observations: treating the product with nitric acid oxidizes it to copper nitrate (blue), and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of copper oxide decomposes to oxygen while oxidizing some oxide to a darker color; a demonstration coats paper with oxide.
