video tutorial Adipic acid via oxidation of cyclohexanone
- Goal: oxidize cyclohexanone to adipic acid using potassium permanganate in water.
- Approach: add sodium hydroxide to shift to the phenol form and enhance oxidation; maintain controlled temperature; use 150 mL water and 32 g KMnO4 (2:1 molar ratio); slowly add cyclohexanone in several batches over ~40 minutes.
- Procedure notes: heat initially with warm water (about 40°C) to kick off the reaction; monitor temperature with a thermometer; apply cooling (ice pack and ice water) as needed to manage exotherm; filter off manganese dioxide; clean with sodium bisulfite.
- Workup: acidify filtrate with hydrochloric acid to generate adipic acid; chill to crystallize the product; filter and dry.
- Result: 3.5 g adipic acid isolated (≈24% yield from 10 g cyclohexanone); product appears fairly pure but some may remain dissolved due to solubility; color/filtration issues can affect purity.
- Precautions: reaction is slow and difficult to control; extra care required when scaling up.
