video tutorial Acetylanthranilic acid and a (failed) test for triboluminescence
- Investigated triboluminescence and synthesized acetyl anthranilic acid from anthranilic acid using acetic anhydride with reflux heating.
- Dry 10 g anthranilic acid; dissolve in 25 mL acetic anhydride in a suitably sized flask; apply internal reflux and heat to a low boil for 10 minutes, then swirl as it dissolves and re-forms before final dissolution.
- Reflux until stable, then add 8 mL water, resume heating to boiling, and allow crystallization over a few hours.
- Filter and wash crystals with ice-cold methanol, then dry to yield 11.7 g of crystalline acetyl anthranilic acid (90% yield from starting anthranilic acid).
- Attempted to observe triboluminescence by crushing crystals and drying at 100°C, but no flashes were observed; considering recrystallization to obtain a large single crystal and asking for tips.
