Description: We did a test and bubbled HCl gas through a equimolar mixture of acetonitrile and acetic acid at room temperature until no more would dissolve....We assembled an apparatus which would allow us to slowly generate HCl gas and bubble this through the liquid mixture whilst suspended in an ice bath and completely closed to the atmosphere.

In-situ generation of HCl via NaCl and sulfuric acid was used to bubble HCl through a mixture of acetonitrile and acetic acid, aiming to form acetyl chloride.
Crystallization occurred on cooling; distillation yielded 4.7 g of colorless liquid (≈7% yield based on starting acetic acid).
The product fumed in air and violently reacted with water, indicating formation of acetyl chloride.
Acetamide hydrochloride was obtained by washing crystals with ether; the researchers plan further optimization (lower temperature, more HCl, and fractional distillation) to improve yield.
